Since reading Tim Ferris 4 Hour Work Week, several years ago, I began looking for way to make the four hour week a reality. I knew that this meant some kind of automation and that I had to escape the trap of trading time for money some how. But I had no clue as to how.
I was working on eBay for some time, trying to make the laptop work for me in creating an income.

But I knew after a while that the strategy I was working with just wasn’t cutting it. I was buying and selling items one at a time. There was no way to scale and I was spending a lot of time finding items to sell and re-list on eBay. I needed another strategy – one which was better somehow and which benefited from automation. What I had was basically a job that I owned, not a business which used leverage, automation and the ability to scale. This is what I was looking for but I just didn’t know it then!
I had bought an ebook from eBay and I kept thinking about the ease of the transaction. I bought the ebook and could automatically download it from my computer. There was no physical postage of an item, nor was there any interaction at all between the customer and the seller. It was completely automated. I knew that I needed a system like this so I could sell things without actually being caught up in the transaction myself.
Tim Ferris 4 Hour Work Week – Automation
In Tim Ferris’s 4 hour work week book he talks about automation and stepping out of corporate life. This wasn’t my problem. I was struggling for money and working sporadically in the film industry. I used my time outside of working hours to learn about building an income from the internet – a laptop lifestyle business. After struggling along with an eBay business for a while, I decided I needed something more lucrative and less time heavy.
I considered the ebook I had bought and wrote a couple of my own – about the film industry, becoming a TV extra and a stuntman. However, I didn’t manage to sell any. I put myself on a marketing course and this led me to a different business model: affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing you can benefit from up to 50% commission by promoting and selling other people’s products.
The benefit of using affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to physically own, purchase of deliver any products yourself. You don’t even need to have any interaction with your customers. All of the process can be automated and scaled up; once you find a strategy which works.
Affiliate Marketing; Selling On Autopilot
Selling products without having to be there in person seemed like the perfect solution and the way forward to make autopilot internet income. But finding a strategy to actually make it happen was a little more difficult. I tried many strategies and failed over and over again! But I learned from every time a method didn’t work!
I eventually found a video while browsing Facebook. I clicked through to a website where I signed up for a free video series. This led me to an online business community where I could learn from successful online marketers directly and in the various training groups online.
This was different from the many other training courses I had taken for a few reasons:
- I actually met the founder members of the company
- There were local meet-ups in my area to meet other members
- You could watch over the shoulders of successful members
- Question and answer sessions allowed me to learn at my own pace

What Makes A Good Automated Business Model?
With automation and the sale of digital products over the internet, you can build a largely automated and scalable business model from anywhere. This is no mean feat! There’s many marketers who’ll tell you this is easy. It’s not easy but it’s much easier than it once was. That’s because there are online business systems and softwares which make it fairly straight to build an online business from scratch.
- Affiliate products – with digital affiliate products you can earn up to 50% commission on a sale and sell them to anyone globally
- Automation – To automate the sale of digital product you need a sales funnel which collects subscribers and turns them into customers.
- A scalable marketing strategy – marketing can be done in a variety of different ways. The fastest is paid marketing. Slower methods include organic marketing and blogging, for example.
- High ticket affiliate marketing products – Give you a much larger return on your investment. This also means paid marketing is more accessible as a marketing option.
- Recurring income affiliate programs – pay you over and over for each single sale.
